No longer in the first blush of youth doesn’t mean we have to dress in woolly cream-colored cardigans and shoes like Cornish pasties. Today, anyone can wear anything and look good, with thousands of over 50s on Insta proving this every day.

But when we look at how we want to look, it seems like we’re less Cher and more chic, with stars dressing beautifully yet flattering and getting the “most stylish” voice.

A new survey from Damart asked which British celebs over 40 had the best dress sense and what matters most when it comes to midlife style.

“Timelessness” was the style factor chosen by the fifth of Britons (20%). Only 2% thought wearing the latest trends was an essential part of looking our best.

And it’s not just a matter of clothes, because confidence (16%) and feeling good (14%) were also crucial to be considered stylish. Knowing what flatters traits like your height and body shape (11%) was also seen as an essential factor by Brits.

Less is more as we get older – keeping your outfit simple (6%) is also seen as an important part of being stylish – but only 4% of UK adults think wearing designer clothes helps us look more stylish.

There is no age limit on style, but 20% said we look most stylish between the ages of 35-40. A more inclusive three in 10 Britons (29%) thought people can look their most stylish “at any age” – fashion icon Iris Apfel is 100 and still sets trends after all.

When asked which celebrities we consider the most stylish, Dame Helen Mirren, 76, came in as the most stylish British celebrity over 40.

While she can undoubtedly rock a ball gown, she’s also not afraid to go for bold or edgy outfits.

Earlier this year, she wowed the crowd that took to the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week in a printed power suit paired with statement geometric jewellery, dazzling heels and graphic eye makeup.

Other celebrities named for their style influence were Dame Judi Dench (17%), Emma Thompson (15%) and Catherine Zeta Jones (15%).

Dame Judi is often photographed in a combination of kaftan or tunic, top and trousers, both on and off the red carpet. She prefers linen and ethnic looks from Hampstead Bazaar, and is a fan of a draped scarf.

Her colorful style and chic white crop have made her a style icon for older women.

In third place is Oscar winner and star of Mare by Eastown Kate Winslet, 46, voted her the UK’s most stylish celebrity by one in six.

Paparazzi snaps usually see her in black, with chinos or loose jeans paired with leather jackets or plain black coats, but like the others, she definitely scrubs herself well for an awards show.

Next, in equal place, were Catherine Zeta Jones and Dame Emma Thompson, who are both fond of daring outfits.

β€œIt’s just not the style of the woman that counts. The survey also looked at British men who are style icons, and found that 12% thought James Bond actor Daniel Craig was the most stylish male celebrity over 40.

He is known for his impeccable look on red carpets, but his street style is just as impressive.

The actor knows how to do the basics just right: he mixes easy fit, neutral colored t-shirts and sweaters, with jeans and fitted coats or jackets, often complemented with a flat cap to walk through the streets of London carefree.

With an equal number of votes of 12%, Idris Elba was also highly praised. The actor loves custom jackets and suits on the red carpet, but also knows how to do street style.

Elba often wears a leather jacket in his everyday outfits and usually keeps it simple, with relaxed fit jeans, simple t-shirts and a cool pair of sneakers.

When it comes to our most stylish over-40s overall, it’s no surprise that more than one in 10 (11%) voted Kate Moss.

Her ability to rock a vintage dress, go casual in jeans, boots and a fedora, or shine with charisma in haute couture remains undiminished.

However, some prefer actor Helena Bonham Carter’s quirky Victoriana, with an 11% equal vote.

From 1950s ensembles to Victorian bloomers, the star has a classic, British eccentric style – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
